AlfonzoI am going to see a financial counselor next Thursday and she said to bring last years tax form and any investments, retirements we may have. I really want to go in there and make a plan not only to get out of debt but to see where our money is going to go in the future. Any thoughts on what we should spend our time on. Any of you that have been to a counselor what did you wish you would have done or what did you do that really helped you? I would love any advice you guys have! Jessica

AhmadOne good thing might be to find out if the councilor is familiar with the Wallet Doctor and the plan that you are currently working.
Bring a copy of TMMO if you have it so that she can glance through it if needed.
Take your budget with you as well.

WallaceOff the top of my head…
I would expect that they will comprise a net worth (how much you own vs.
how much you owe). They will look to see if you are adequately insured (life insurance, umbrella policy, etc). See what your income is, how much you are spending. Project when you want to retire, how much you think you want at that time (same life style, little less…), how much you will need to save to get there.
I have had experience with a financial advisor. Don’t know it they are the same as what you are seeing. We were looking at investments, etc.
and not dealing w/ our day to day budget in detail. Perhaps yours will be looking closer at your budget details? CaseyOur experience with financial counselors has been pretty neutral.
None were really good, and none were horribly bad.
On a whole, I haven’t been impressed with any of them.
The one thing I do remember was one of the counselors asking us where we thought our kids were going to go to college.
While I understand why he asked the question, I looked at my 3-year-old and asked the counselor where you go to college to become a pirate, his life goal at that time.
Peg and she said to bring last years tax form and any investments, retirements we may have.
